Linfield University honors 81 nursing graduates on Dec. 15

December 7, 2023 by Kelly Williams Brown

The Linfield University-Good Samaritan School of Nursing honors its newest graduating class in its December 2023 Pinning Ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 in the Parkrose High School theater. Tickets are required for the in-person event, but the ceremony will also be livestreamed on the Linfield University YouTube channel.

The ceremony honors 81 graduates earning their Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

“As we pin our December BSN graduates, we honor their remarkable journey. Getting to this day is a testament to their perseverance, knowledge, and resilience,” said Paul Smith, dean of the School of Nursing. “The pinning ceremony marks not just the culmination of their education but the beginning of their professional lives of care. I have no doubt these students will elevate health care standards and touch lives with their empathy and expertise.”

Pinning ceremonies are unique to nursing, with a history that traces back to Florence Nightingale. Each graduate receives a unique school pin that links graduates to their specific program.

But the pins do not come from the dean or a faculty member. Instead, each student receives a school pin from a chosen person — someone who inspires them or someone who supported them on their journey to obtaining their nursing degree — spouses, parents, grandparents, a special faculty member or even their own child.

Although this pinning ceremony marks the completion of their Linfield nursing education, the 81 pinned students will also be invited to walk across the stage at the 2024 Commencement in May on the McMinnville campus.

The Linfield University-Good Samaritan School of Nursing was created when Linfield College and the Good Samaritan Hospital’s nursing education program merged in 1982. The Good Samaritan nursing program traces its roots to 1890 and founder Emily Loveridge. With this heritage, Linfield’s program is the oldest continuously operated nursing school in the Pacific Northwest. The School of Nursing currently offers undergraduate and graduate nursing education, online and in person at the Linfield University Portland Campus.
