April 2, 2024 by Kelly Williams Brown

By Kelly Williams Brown

Students perform a HulaTickets for Linfield’s Lū’au and Hō’ike are now on sale. Students from the Hui O Lōkahi student club coordinate this treasured spring tradition, which includes a lū‘au (meal), mākeke (Hawaiian marketplace) and hō‘ike (performance). The 51st annual event is from 4-9:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27 on the Linfield University McMinnville Campus and is open to the public.

Tickets to dinner and the show are sold separately and available at linfield.events/luau-2024.html.

Attendees can choose from three different lū‘au seatings at 4, 5 and 6 p.m. in the Rutschman Field House, each of which cost $24. Anavai O Te Ora and Ka pa olapa will perform hula and Tahitian dancing during the 4-5 p.m. seating. Wehilei, a multiple Nā Hoku Hanohano award winner, will sing during the 5-6 p.m. seating. Tickets to the lū’au are $24.

The mākeke is open from 4-7 p.m. in the HHPA Complex Upper Gymnasium and features Hawaiian and local vendors and artists, including LC Ohana Designs, JB Custom Design, Pauoa Poke and more.

But the centerpiece of the evening is the hō‘ike, a dance performance that includes dozens of Linfield students alongside professional performers in Ted Wilson Gymnasium. The 2024 show is titled “Nā Lani ‘Ēha” and will share stories of ali’i, the hereditary rulers and chiefs in Ancient Hawai’i. Makani Tabura of the podcast, “Culturised,” will serve as emcee. The evening also includes hula, Tahitian, Siva and Māori performances, as well as fire dancing from Napunui Gabriel. Tickets for the hō‘ike range from $20 for Linfield students to $35 for VIP seating.

Find more information and purchase tickets on the event website. Questions about the event can be directed to hawaiileadership@linfield.edu.
