Achy Obejas, an acclaimed author and noted translator, will be speaking at Linfield College as part of her residency as the 2018 Woodrow Wilson fellow.
Obejas will read from her work on Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield. This talk is free and open to the public and will also be livestreamed at www.facebook.com/LinfieldCollege. After the reading, there will be a reception and book signing in Jonasson Hall in Melrose Hall. Obejas will also be visiting classrooms beginning Monday, Feb. 26 as part of her residency.
Obejas’s work includes the recently released “The Tower of the Antilles,” a short story collection that examines the relationship Cubans, exiles and Cuban-Americans have with their homeland. Obejas also wrote the critically acclaimed novels “Ruin,” “Days of Awe” and three other books of fiction. Her poetry chapbook “This is What Happened in Our Other Life” was both a critical favorite and a best-seller. As a translator, she has worked with Junot Díaz, Wendy Guerra, Rita Indiana and others, and in 2014 she received the USA Ford Fellowship from USA Artists for both her writing and translations. Her journalism includes work published by The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Village Voice, In These Times and the Chicago Tribune, where she was part of a 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning team. Born in Havana, she is currently the Director of the master’s program in translation at Mills College in Oakland, Calif.
Her visit is sponsored by Linfield College through the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program, which supports small liberal arts colleges by bringing together people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives for the express purpose of discussion and learning.
