Alum sponsors “No York Marathon” to raise funds for storm victims

November 7, 2012 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Linfield College graduate Tony Carpenter ’98 trained for the New York City Marathon for months, but when it got cancelled due to the storm, he created his own marathon, to raise funds for storm victims. VIDEO

New York City’s mayor canceled the world’s biggest marathon just two days before the event. In a city devastated by superstorm Sandy, holding a road race through five battered boroughs seemed like a bad idea.

So Carpenter created his own marathon. When other runners saw his idea on Facebook, they joined him by jogging on tracks all over the Portland metro area.

Carpenter majored in mass communication, served as a Wildcat mascot and was voted “Mr. Linfield” in 1995.
