In conjunction with the Oregon Alliance of Independent Colleges & Universities, Linfield College will cohost Anthony Jack, author of The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Poor Students, for a lecture Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in Ice Auditorium, located in Melrose Hall.
Jack is a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and assistant professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His research documents the overlooked diversity among lower-income undergraduates: the doubly disadvantaged — those who enter college from local, typically distressed public high schools — and privileged poor — those who do so from boarding, day and preparatory high schools. Jack’s first book, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges Are Failing Poor Students, was released in March 2019, and The New York Times Magazine recently published his essay, “I Was a Low-Income College Student, Classes Weren’t the Hard Part.”

Jack’s lecture on poverty and equality within higher education will be followed by audience questions and a book signing. Attendees can bring a copy of Jack’s book or purchase one at Linfield College. The event is free and open to the public.
