Linfield students attend classes across globe this month

January 5, 2011 by Linfield News Team

Study AbroadLinfield’s January Term is only one month long, but a lot gets packed in, as students study, not only on campus, but around the world.

For students’ first experience abroad, Linfield picks up the tab for airfare from Portland to the destination country and back. The school’s international courses are so popular that the Institute of International Education places Linfield in the top 25 baccalaureate schools for student participation in study abroad.

In on-the-ground courses, students trace the origins of evolution on the Galapagos Islands and visit opera houses in Austria. They study Maori culture in New Zealand, Arab civilization in Spain, medieval philosophy in Europe and technological advances in China. Many courses have a service component, with students and faculty caring for children in Mexican orphanages or building homes in Guatemala.

Jordan Marcelo Jacobo ’11, who lived in Nottingham, England, with Linfield’s Study Abroad program, wrote, “I always imagined the world as a faraway place, but it is so close, at our fingertips, and when you see the world, you care about it.”

Half of Linfield’s students study abroad — for a month, semester or year, and the school arranges stays with host families for longer visits.
