Guest artists Arwen Myers, soprano, and Susan McDaniel, piano, will present a virtual art song recital as a part of the inaugural Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Masterclass Program at Linfield University at 7 p.m. Friday, April 2. An art song is a vocal music composition, usually written for one voice with piano accompaniment, and usually in the classical art music tradition.
The recital will feature songs by Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677), Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) and Samuel Barber (1910-1981). A panel discussion will follow.

Myers captivates audiences with her timeless artistry and exquisite interpretations. Myers’ oratorio and solo appearances feature repertoire from the baroque to modern day. She has performed with the Portland Baroque Orchestra, Early Music Vancouver, Pacific MusicWorks, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.
McDaniel has appeared widely as a solo and collaborative pianist, including regional and national concert tours as well as appearances in France, Germany, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. She worked as a member of the music staff at Seattle Opera and Utah Festival Opera. Since returning to her home state of Oregon, McDaniel has maintained an active performing career as a member of the Northwest Piano Trio and Northwest Art Song, and was the resident pianist of All Classical Portland’s live-performance radio show, “Thursdays at Three.” She was previously a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Portland and Linfield College, and spent five seasons as the head opera coach at the Atlantic Music Festival in Waterville, Maine.
The recital is part of the Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Mentorship Program, which offers student composers on campus, as well as youth from the surrounding region, the opportunity to work closely with professional mentor musicians during a residency program. Through this program, students build both composition portfolios and relationships with professional musicians; develop essential skills in collaboration and communication, and observe chamber music masterclasses. The visiting artists workshop student pieces in progress, coach chamber music ensembles, offer an open seminar on a musical topic, and present a full recital of contemporary works.
