Author John Daniel to read from ‘Gifted’ at Linfield College

February 6, 2018 by Christian Feuerstein

By Christian Feuerstein

Author John DanielThree-time Oregon Book Award winning author John Daniel will read from his debut novel, “Gifted,” as part of an ongoing series of readings at Linfield College.

Daniel will read on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield.

“Gifted” is set in the mid-1990s, when environmentalists and timber communities warred over the future of the last old-growth forests of the Northwest. The novel tells the story of a young man with a spiritual imagination and a rare affinity for wild creatures, who comes of age under harsh circumstances, negotiating the wildness of his home country, his human relationships and the emerging complexities of his own being.

A nature and environmental writer of considerable reputation, Daniel is also the author of “Rogue River Journal” and “Looking After,” memoirs which have won Oregon Book Awards for Literary Nonfiction and the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, among other grants and honors. Daniel, a former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University, has taught writing at colleges and universities across the country.

This reading is a part of the “Readings at the Nick” series. The lecture is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Linfield Nicholson Library and the Linfield College English Department. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte at 503-883-2517, swhyte@linfield.edu.
