Author to discuss financial literacy for young adults

October 10, 2012 by Linfield News Team

The importance of financial literacy for young adults will be the focus of a reading Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of the Jereld R. Nicholson Library at Linfield College.

Dave Straube will talk about his book, “Someday is Not a Plan,” a collection of financial advice geared towards 20-year-olds. He was inspired to write the book after giving two college-age nieces a financial quiz and realizing how much they needed to learn. When his own children went to college, he realized they too needed a greater understanding of finances.

Straube learned about the world of finance by reading books, magazines, newspapers and reports; paying taxes; and asking questions.

Straube of Portland is the father of a current Linfield student. He earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and his master’s in computer science from Stevens Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Alabama.

The reading is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Linfield Economics Department and Nicholson Library. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte, college librarian, at 503-883-2517, swhyte@linfield.edu.
