A nursing text co-edited by a Linfield College nursing professor, Joanna Rowe, was selected by the American Journal of Nursing as first place Book of the Year. “Family Health Care Nursing: Theory, Practice and Research” (5th edition) was ranked in the category of Child Health.
The award is the most highly held for nursing textbooks. All new nursing textbooks published in the year are reviewed to determine which books further nursing education and knowledge. The text is used in approximately 100 nursing programs in the United States and Canada.
Joanna Rowe Kaakinen is the lead editor on this book and authored six chapters in the text. In addition, four more Linfield nursing faculty authored chapters in the book: Laura Rodgers, Vivian Tong, Jeannette O’Brien and Kathleen Bell.
“The book has significantly evolved over time,” Rowe said. “My contribution as lead editor in the 4th and 5th edition was to move the book’s focus from research to practice. A major change we made in the 5th edition was to make the book more international. We added a nursing faculty member from Canada to the editorial team and eight of our 28 book authors are from Canada.”
Rowe also won an award for creating the family case study in the chronic illness chapter, which discusses how to work with families living with Parkinson’s disease. This award was from the Edmond J. Safra Visiting Nurse Faculty Program, of which Rowe was a 2013 Alumni Awardee.
