Chris Dahlvig, assistant professor of business at Linfield University, and Jolyn Dahlvig, associate dean of students at the Oregon Institute of Technology, will present “Institutional Expenditures and Student Graduation and Retention: The Obvious and the Unbelievable” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21. As the cost of higher education continues to rise, pressure from community colleges offering four-year degrees increases and the accountability for how funds are used grows more intense, college administrators must understand how to best use finite university dollars to support students.
This presentation will share the correlations these researchers have discovered between certain Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) expense categories and retention and graduation rates of first-time, full-time students attending a subset of four-year liberal arts institutions. They will also suggest what’s needed next in their research and how their findings might influence institutional spending at Linfield.
A member of the Linfield faculty since 2018, Chris Dahlvig spent 20 years working in the not-for-profit sector in various accounting roles in a wide range of industries including higher education, outdoor ministry, healthcare, e-waste recycling and philanthropy. He earned his MBA from Northwest Christian University and his bachelor’s in accounting from Whitworth University.
