A composition by Zach Gulaboff Davis was selected through a worldwide competition as one of 15 pieces to be premiered during a “Fifteen Minutes of Fame” showcase Sunday, May 18, in New York. Davis, of Salem, is a senior music major at Linfield College.

“Fifteen Minutes of Fame” is a showcase sponsored by Vox Novus that features 15 one-minute compositions for a specific performer or ensemble, providing an opportunity for composers to get their work performed and heard by a worldwide audience. Davis’ piece was selected as one of the 15 pieces performed by pianist Yumi Suehiro.

“As a young composer, having your works recognized is essential,” said Davis. “I am grateful that my work is being recognized on the national level. Recognition such as this makes you more visible as a composer.”

Davis studies piano performance and composition at Linfield, and credits his education with helping his development as a musician and shaping his goals.

“Being in the small environment of the Linfield music department has shaped my future goals: namely, that I want to be a music professor,” Davis said. “I have had the opportunity to work closely with faculty, help teach music courses and have had my compositions performed.”

He has performed at the Portland International Piano Festival and the Oregon Bach Festival, and won the concerto competitions of the Salem Youth Symphony and Linfield Chamber Orchestra. As a composer, Davis’ “Sonata for Viola and Piano” won the American Federation of Music Club’s competition for chamber music and another of his compositions was featured at the 2013 Oregon Bach Festival. Following his graduation from Linfield June 1, Davis will pursue his master’s in music composition at Mannes College of Music in New York City as a scholarship student. Davis also plans to complete a doctorate in composition and would love to one day teach music at the collegiate level.
