Catherine Reinke, associate professor of biology at Linfield University, presents “Research Explorations in Genomics – Developing and Supporting Student-Scientist Partnerships at Linfield and Beyond” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 17. The event, which is open to the public, will be held on Zoom. Pre-registration is required at https://inside.linfield.edu/faculty-resources/faculty-lecture-series.html.

During the talk, she’ll explain how genome annotation and comparative genomics address new research questions, from the effects of SARS-CoV-2 variants to the evolution of gene expression. She’ll also discuss Linfield students’ collaboration with the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP), an international group of scientists engaged in comparative genomics research. Reinke is a GEP Steering Committee member, co-director of new member training and developer of a virtual training program that aims to expand GEP’s membership by increasing research opportunities for diverse groups.

Reinke has been at Linfield since 2012. Before coming to McMinnville, she conducted research at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, and taught at Carleton College, her alma mater.

In the lab, Reinke is specifically focused on researching how cells use their genomes. She’s also passionate about spreading awareness and promoting public interest scientific research.

The presentation is part of Linfield’s Faculty Lecture Series, which shares the professional work and interests of the university faculty with the university and McMinnville communities. More information on the series, including the full schedule, is available at https://inside.linfield.edu/faculty-resources/faculty-lecture-series.html. The series is sponsored by Linfield’s Office of Academic Affairs.
