Marshall Theatre hosts “Doctor Voynich and Her Children”

Linfield University’s 103rd theatrical season opens with Leanna Keyes’ “Doctor Voynich and Her Children,” Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Combining theatrical history and a prediction for the U.S., “Doctor Voynich and Her Children” draws from Bertolt Brecht’s foundational play “Mother Courage and Her Children” and explores women’s rights in a post–apocalyptic United States. This play may not be suitable for all audiences due to mature themes and language. Recommended for ages 16 and older.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, 29, 30 and Oct. 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2 in Linfield’s Marshall Theatre. Tickets are $12 for full price; $10 for seniors (62+) and Linfield employees (two tickets per ID); and $8 for students (any school, one ticket per ID). Seating is reserved. Tickets are available online and will be available at the Marshall Theatre Box Office beginning Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. Located in Ford Hall, the box office is open Monday and Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. and from noon to 2 on Sunday, Oct. 2. Contactless ticketing is available through the online ordering system, with mobile ticket or print-at-home options.

Through funding from the Lacroute Art Series, playwright Leanna Keyes will be present for a post-performance panel discussion on Sept. 29. Titled “The Future of Civil Rights and Climate,” panelists will discuss the play’s themes of reproductive rights, queerness, body autonomy, climate and their interconnections. Sponsored by Learning Across Boundaries (LAB), the panel will be moderated by Associate Professor Lindsey Mantoan, (dramaturg and director of LAB) with additional panelists Rachel Schley, assistant professor of history, and Professor Janet Gupton, the director of the play. During her residence, Keyes will also present a playwriting workshop for students and visit classes.

Linfield’s Theatre Program continues its season with “Firebringer” Nov. 10-19; “Eco-Tales,” a series of student-adapted fairy tales, March 9-11, 2023; and “Hurricane Diane” April 27-May 6, 2023. This theme this season is “A Season of Eco–Theatre!” with productions focused on using classical and fun narratives to inspire a renewed commitment to eco-friendly practices.
