Faculty recital features whimsical cello music

October 11, 2019 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Cellist Diane Chaplin, Linfield College adjunct professor of music, will present “Il Violoncello Capriccioso: A Concert for Solo Cello” Saturday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. in the Delkin Recital Hall at the Vivian A. Bull Music Center at Linfield.

Chaplin, a solo artist, chamber music cellist, and music educator, recently returned from a summer in Italy, where she presented “Il Violoncello Capriccioso,” a critically acclaimed solo recital. The word “capriccio” in Italian suggests something quirky, fun and a bit whimsical. With a collection of capriccios, variations and suites from musicians Michal Stahel, Ernest Bloch, Giuseppe Cambini, and more, Chaplin has crafted a program that she will accompany with verbal descriptions of the works.

Chaplin is in her sixth year on the faculty at Linfield College, where she teaches privately, directs the Linfield Cello Ensemble and conducts the Linfield Chamber Ensemble. Outside of teaching, Chaplin tours the U.S. as a featured member of the Portland Cello Project and is often heard in solo and chamber music performances in the Portland area and across the globe. During 20 years as a quartet cellist with the Colorado Quartet in New York, Chaplin performed in more than 20 countries and produced a variety of critically acclaimed albums. Chaplin holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and The Juilliard School.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 503-883-2275 or visit linfield.edu/arts.
