Linfield University will present a series of events this spring featuring the Portland-based chamber music ensemble Fear No Music.
Join Linfield’s Department of Music for 30-minute streamed recitals followed by panel discussions, as well as two masterclasses. All events are free and open to the public. Pre-registration for each event is required.
February’s events are:
- Recital featuring James Shields, clarinet – Monday, Feb. 1. Performance begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by panel discussion with Shields and Fear No Music executive director, Kenji Bunch, from 8:15-9:15 p.m.
- Linfield students, faculty and staff may pre-register for the recital
- Free and open to the public, anyone outside the Linfield community may view the recital on the university’s YouTube channel
- All participants may view the panel discussion following the recital on the university’s YouTube channel
- Masterclass with Shields – Tuesday, Feb. 2. Open to all Linfield student instrumentalists from 4:30-6 p.m. Community members are welcome to tune in and observe. Contact Abigail Sperling at asperling@linfield.edu for the Zoom link.
All events as part of this residency highlight the works of Black composers as part of Fear No Music’s “Tomorrow is My Turn” virtual season.
“Given that the classical music landscape has been severely under-represented by minorities and women, this residency will give our students and community a rare opportunity to explore the intersection of music and race,” said Anna Song, associate professor of music and chair of the Department of Music. “It is also a great opportunity to hear new music written by minority composers and learn more about the role music can play in either resisting or instigating societal change for the better.”
While the 30-minute concerts are part of Fear No Music’s public event series, the panel discussions and masterclasses are being offered exclusively to Linfield’s students and local communities.
Linfield students, faculty and staff are invited to watch the events in Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian Bull Music Center, pending Yamhill County moving out of the Extreme Risk category. Community members may attend the events virtually. Links for pre-registration and virtual attendance will be provided in the “Upcoming Events” section of the Department of Music website: www.linfield.edu/music.
