Linfield University’s Department of Music presents the third in a series of events this spring featuring the Portland-based chamber music ensemble Fear No Music.
Violist Kenji Bunch and pianist Monica Ohuchi perform a 30-minute streamed recital at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 18. A panel discussion featuring the artists and composers precedes the event and begins at 7 p.m.

Ohuchi is an internationally-known soloist, chamber musician and educator. She currently serves as the executive director and pianist for Fear No Music. Ohuchi is a founding member of the piano quartet Thunder Egg Consort and performs locally with 45th Parallel. Her solo album, “Monica’s Notebook,” was released in May 2011 and featured twelve original etudes, ranging from jazz, blues, rock and classical.
Regarded as one of America’s most prolific composers, Bunch’s original works have been hailed as a blending complex classical traditions with an instantly enjoyable and accessible style. He has been commissioned to write pieces for symphonies and festivals around the world, dance ensembles and films. He currently serves as artistic director of Fear No Music and teaches viola, composition and music theory at Portland State University, Reed College and the Portland Youth Philharmonic.
Ohuchi and Bunch’s recital features individual and joint performances of the following works:
- “Sonoran Storm” for solo viola by Nokuthula Ngwenyama
- “Azuretta” for solo piano by Regina Harris Baiocchi
- “Sanctum Rhapsody” for viola and piano by Adolphus Hailstork
The March 18 recital is part of Fear No Music’s residency at Linfield, highlighting the works of Black composers. While the 30-minute concerts are part of the ensemble’s public virtual season, panel discussions and masterclasses are being offered exclusively to Linfield’s students and local communities. A recital and discussion with pianist Jeff Payne at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 5, ends the group’s residency at Linfield.
