‘It’s a Girl’ screened at Linfield College Portland Campus

April 3, 2013 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

It's a GirlA film screening of “It’s a Girl” will be shown at the Linfield College Portland Campus on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. A follow-up Q&A with Director Evan Davis will follow. The event is free and the public is invited.

In India, China and many other parts of the world today, children are killed, aborted and abandoned simply because they are girls. The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls are missing in the world today because of gendercide. Girls who survive infancy are often subject to neglect, and many grow up to face extreme violence and even death at the hands of their own husbands or other family members.

The war against girls is rooted in centuries-old tradition and sustained by deeply ingrained cultural dynamics that, in combination with government policies, accelerate the elimination of girls.

Shot on location in India and China, “It’s a Girl” tells the stories of abandoned and trafficked girls, women who suffer extreme dowry-related violence, brave mothers fighting to save their daughters’ lives, and mothers who would kill for a son. Global experts and grassroots activists put the stories in context, collectively lament the lack of any truly effective action against this injustice, and advocate a path towards change.

Director Evan Grae Davis has traveled the globe with camera in hand for 16 years, advocating for social justice through writing and directing short documentaries and educational videos that champion the cause of the poor and exploited. Davis draws from his experience and passion as he lends leadership to Shadowline Films, a team of filmmakers who share a common concern for the critical issues of our time. “It’s a Girl” is his first feature-length documentary.

The event is sponsored by the Linfield College Student Life Department, and will be held in Room 110 of Peterson Hall on Linfield’s Portland Campus, located at 2255 NW Northrup. For more information, contact Lisa Burch at (503) 413-7561 or lburch@linfield.edu.
