The News-Register profiled Professor Chris Keaveney, who developed Linfield’s Asian Studies program into one of the strongest in the Pacific Northwest.
Dr. Keaveney, who is known as Linfield’s “Asia guy,” has been instrumental in facilitating Japanese studies conferences for students and helping his students win prestigious national scholarships, including a Fulbright.
Linfield now averages more than 35 students majoring and minoring in Japanese and Asian Studies each year. An integral part of the Japanese Program is Study Abroad, with majors required to study in Japan for an academic year, and minors for one semester.
“Living abroad changes your perspective about your home country and yourself,” Keaveney says. “You look inward and find your values.”
Linfield attracts a large contingent of Chinese students and is in the top 25 schools in the nation for student participation in study abroad.
