Jonasson lecture to examine the Yukikaze

February 8, 2019 by Christian Feuerstein

By Christian Feuerstein

Brett L WalkerBrett L. Walker, noted historian, will present “Global History of the Destroyer Yukikaze: Energy, Natural Resources, and Japan’s Participation in the Second World War” on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room of Nicholson Library at Linfield College.

Walker will examine the unusually long life of the Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Yukikaze. The life of Yukikaze offers a fresh vantage point on Japan’s participation in the second World War, one shaped by international arms treaties and fueled by the demand for energy and other natural resources.

Walker is Regents professor of history at Montana State University-Bozeman. He is the author of “The Conquest of Ainu Lands: Ecology and Culture in Japanese Expansion, 1590-1800;” “A Concise History of Japan;” “The Lost Wolves of Japan;” and “Toxic Archipelago: A History of Industrial Disease in Japan.”

This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Jonas A. “Steine” Jonasson Endowed Lecture that honors Jonasson, professor emeritus of history, who was associated with Linfield for more than 60 years before his death in 1997. The endowment is used to bring in distinguished scholars and speakers in the area of history. Jonasson held the unofficial title of Linfield historian and wrote “Bricks Without Straw,” a history of the college.
