José Angel Araguz, assistant professor of English and creative writing, will read from his poetry Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. in Nicholson Library at Linfield College. The event will kick off the annual Readings at the Nick series at Linfield.
Araguz is a CantoMundo fellow—a national organization that cultivates a community of Latinx poets through workshops, symposia and public readings—and the author of the collections “Everything We Think We Hear,” “Small Fires” and “Until We Are Level Again.” His poetry, fiction, nonfiction and reviews have appeared in multiple publications including “Prairie Schooner” and “The Bind.”
Araguz also serves as an editor for the online journal “Right Hand Pointing” and is on the editorial team of Airlie Press. He runs the poetry blog The Friday Influence and the Instagram poetry project @poetryamano.
Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, Araguz arrived at Linfield in 2017 after completing his Ph.D. in creative writing and comparative literature from the University of Cincinnati. Along with his work with Airlie Press, Araguz has been active in the local community, giving talks in local schools, hosting a Bilingual Poetry Night at The Gallery of Ten Oaks, and presenting readings in local venues including The Book Bin in Salem. In April, he was invited to read for the Lane Literary Guild’s Windfall Reading Series held at the Eugene Public Library. He also participated in a workshop and book signing for this year’s Terroir Creative Writing Festival and will be running a workshop at the Oregon Poetry Association conference this fall. In October, he will be one of the featured readers at The Magic Barrel: A Reading to Fight Hunger in Corvallis.
The reading is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Linfield Nicholson Library and the Linfield English Department. For more information, contact Susan Barnes Whyte at 503-883-2517, swhyte@linfield.edu.
