Linfield College will present Keyboard Kapers – Piano Masterclass and Recital, featuring students of Professor Albert Kim and visiting artist Daria Rabotkina, Thursday and Friday, March 16-17. Both events will be held in the Delkin Recital Hall of the Vivian A. Bull Music Center.
The piano masterclass on Thursday, March 16, at 4 p.m., will be taught by Daria Rabotkina and feature Kim’s students. The recital on Friday, March 17, at 7 p.m., will feature Rabotkina, Kim and Linfield students performing works by Debussy, Bach, Scarlatti, Tcherepnin, Bartok and Schumann. Rabotkina and Kim will conclude the performance with Robert Schumann’s “Variations in the Form of a Canon” for two pianos.
Rabotkina was born in Kazan, Russia, to a family of musicians and received her education at the Kazan State Conservatory and Mannes College of Music in New York City. She also holds a doctorate degree and the Artist Certificate from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Natalya Antonova. Rabotkina joined the Texas State University music faculty as assistant professor and artist/teacher of piano at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, in fall 2016. Winner of the 2007 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Rabotkina has received top prizes at many international competitions and participated in Russia’s White Nights Festival, Finland’s Kuhmo Festival, Copenhagen’s Summer Festival and Germany’s MusikFest in Kreuth. In the United States, Rabotkina has appeared at the Rockport Chamber Music Festival, International Keyboard Institute and Festival, Music Academy of the West, and PianoSummer at New Paltz.
Kim is assistant professor of music at Linfield, where he teaches piano, theory, music history and chamber music. Born to South Korean parents, he made his public debut at 10, when he substituted for an ailing Vladimir Horowitz to inaugurate the 500,000th Steinway piano at Carnegie Hall. He made his solo recital debuts in the U.S. and Europe as a Carnegie Hall/European Concert Hall Organization Rising Star, followed by recitals at Ravinia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Canary Islands as a member of the former Kim-Jacobsen-Arron Trio. Kim performs throughout the U.S. and China, with recent or upcoming engagements at the Dakota Sky International Piano Festival, Dongfang Arts School, Castleman Quartet Program West, Neskowin Chamber Music and Texas State University. He maintains an active profile as a transcriber, with his solo paraphrase of Ravel’s La Valse and chamber version of Strauss’s Salome receiving recent premieres. Kim is the pianist of The Tabletop Opera, a multimedia performance collective based at the Eastman School of Music.
