Marvin Henberg is no stranger to Linfield. The former professor, administrator and interim president presents the keynote address at Opening Convocation at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28 in Ted Wilson Gymnasium. The talk is entitled “Liberal Arts in Action” and focuses on dispelling the myth that the liberal arts and sciences are not vocation-worthy.
The lecture is free and open to the Linfield community. Face coverings are required. Faculty and staff attending the event can RSVP online.
Henberg started his academic career as a professor of philosophy at the University of Idaho. He became a member of the Linfield faculty in 1994. While here, Henberg not only taught philosophy courses, but he also served as director of the environmental studies program, the vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. In 2005, when Vivian A. Bull retired, Henberg was invited to serve as Linfield’s interim president. In 2009, Henberg was hired as president and the College of Idaho. He retired from that position in 2015. Henberg has been nominated by the faculty to serve on the Board of Trustees.
Henberg is the author of “Inspired Pragmatism: An Illustrated History of Linfield College.”
He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. in philosophy, politics and economics from the University of Oxford and a B.A. in English literature from Washington and Lee University.
Convocation is the traditional ceremony that celebrates the beginning of the new academic year. In addition to Henberg’s address, the event will include performances by the Linfield Marching Band and Linfield students. Classes at Linfield begin Monday, Aug. 30.
