Linfield Anthropology Museum work showcased in regional exhibit

February 15, 2012 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Linfield students shine a light on female archaeologists who have contributed to the field. The Willamette Heritage Center exhibit is free for members of the Linfield community.

“Willamette Women: Our History is Our Strength” is on display at the Salem center. The event showcases the work of 20 mid-valley heritage, cultural and history museums and organizations, which each shine a light on women from their communities.

Linfield students working with the Linfield Anthropology Museum are hosting a display about influential female archaeologists since the mid-1800s. Women have faced many challenges gaining entry to and participating in the field of archaeology, but they have contributed greatly to our knowledge of past cultures and lifeways.

The Linfield student display also provides images of women from the college’s sociology and anthropology department participating in a 2007 field school.

“The Linfield display not only honors the women who came before them, but helps ensure that women persist in pursuing archaeology as a career,” says Keni Sturgeon, Willamette Heritage Center director and adjunct professor at Linfield.

The Willamette Women exhibit runs through March 10 at the Willamette Heritage Center, located at 1313 Mill Street SE in Salem, Ore. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event is free for members of the Linfield College community with a valid school ID, and free for all visitors on Tuesday. For more information contact Sturgeon at (503) 585-7012 or ksturge@linfield.edu.
