Linfield Chamber Orchestra to feature student artists

November 17, 2010 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Linfield Chamber OrchestraThe Linfield Chamber Orchestra will feature student concerto competition winners in a performance Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall at Linfield College.

The performance will include the overture to the opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” by Otto Nicolai. Derived from the Shakespeare play of the same name, the overture is a humorous pastiche of some of the best melodies of the opera.

The concert will conclude with the “Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 (Spring)” by Robert Schumann. The composition was Schumann’s first symphonic work and illustrates his sense of longing for spring.

Linfield students Jeremy Moll (baritone) and Ryan Dickman (saxophone) were the winners of the Linfield College Department of Music concerto competition and will be the featured guest artists. Michael Gesme will conduct.

“This concert is always a treat because of the excitement generated by these talented students,” said Board President Nora Stevens.

A collaboration of the Linfield College Department of Music and the community, the McMinnville-based orchestra now attracts guest artists and professional musicians from across Oregon, southwest Washington and the world.

Single reserved tickets are $25. General admission is $18, and $5 for K-12 students. Linfield College is located at 900 SE Baker Street in McMinnville. For ticket and concert information, visit www.lcomusic.org or contact the chamber orchestra at 503-883-2637 or LCO@linfield.edu.
