Linfield Chamber Orchestra to perform Beethoven, Barber and Ravel

September 15, 2011 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

The Linfield Chamber Orchestra will perform Friday, Sept. 16, at 8 p.m. at Linfield College.

The “Remembrance and Revolution” concert marks the 21st Anniversary Season of the orchestra.

The program will include Maurice Ravel’s “Tombeau de Couperin” and “Pavane for a Dead Princess,” Samuel Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915” and Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 1.”

The works feature musical remembrances of people and times past. “Tombeau de Couperin” is a set of baroque dance movements, each dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer who died fighting in World War I, while the “Pavane” is an expression of musical nostalgia for bygone Spanish traditions. “Knoxville Summer of 1915” is based on a poem by James Agee recounting the memories of a summer evening as seen through the eyes of a five-year-old child. The concert concludes with the first symphony of Beethoven, a work that at first recalls many of his symphonic contemporaries, but in reality is the beginning of a true symphonic revolution.

The concert will be in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall on the Linfield campus, at 900 SE Baker Street in McMinnville. Single reserved tickets are $27. General admission is $20 and $5 for students K-12. For ticket and concert information, visit Linfield Chamber Orchestra or contact the orchestra at (503) 833-2637 or LCO@linfield.edu.

This year’s Linfield Chamber Orchestra (LCO) season is sponsored by WillaKenzie Estate, with the first concert sponsored by First Federal and the LCO board of the directors.
