Noted author and food activist Marion Nestle will present the Linfield Convocations address Monday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. in the Ted Wilson Gymnasium.
The public is invited and the event is free.
Marion Nestle is a consumer advocate and nutritionist who focuses on the politics of food and dietary choice. Her research examines scientific, economic and social influences on food choice and obesity, with an emphasis on the role of food marketing.
She has authored three prize-winning books, Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health; Safe Food: The Politics of Food Safety; and What to Eat. Her latest book, Pet Food Politics: The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine, was published in 2008. She also writes the Food Matters column for the San Francisco Chronicle and is a regular blogger for www.foodpolitics.com.
Nestle is the Paulette Goddard Professor in the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University, which she chaired from 1988-2003. She has held faculty positions at Brandeis University and the UCSF School of Medicine. From 1986-88, she served as senior nutrition policy advisor in the Department of Health and Human Services and was managing editor of the 1988 Surgeon General’s Report on Nutrition and Health.
Nestle’s presentation will reflect issues addressed in Michael Pollan’s book, In Defense of Food, a summer reading project for incoming students and the centerpiece for Freshmen Colloquium discussions, programs and classes during fall semester.
Convocation is the traditional opening ceremony that marks the beginning of the academic year. New and returning faculty members in full academic regalia will greet incoming Linfield students. Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 31.
