It was a once-in-a-lifetime event: Linfield College was in the path of a solar eclipse on Monday, Aug. 21, 2017. The college invited the community to celebrate on campus, and the event has been awarded a gold medal by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
CASE District VIII awarded Linfield College and its communications and marketing team a Gold in the Special Events category for its eclipse event. The day included free commemorative eclipse viewing glasses, student research and a special talk before the eclipse by Michael Crosser, professor of physics and chair of the physics department, in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium on campus.
More than 2,000 visitors came to campus to watch the eclipse. Every member of the communications and marketing team had a key role in this event. Linfield hosted onsite media and live broadcasts which began the day before and continued through the eclipse. The communications and marketing plan included live video streaming, media relations, branding, photography, videography, social media and a web page.
CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) District VIII is comprised of 152 member institutions in western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Award winners were honored at the 2019 CASE Conference, held Feb. 8 in Vancouver, BC.
