Damian Williams, assistant professor of practice in the School of Business, died June 12 after a battle with cancer.
He joined Linfield in 2022, following a long and successful career in sports business and as the softball coach at Willamette University. At Linfield, he founded the Front Office Sports group that gave students an opportunity to work on real-world projects with teams and organizations across the Pacific Northwest.
Despite his illness, he taught a full courseload during the spring semester, and was an active and engaged member of the Linfield community. Only last month, he was honored with Linfield’s R.J. McIntyre Distinguished Professor award for his work with business students.
In her remarks during the faculty award ceremony in May, School of Business Dean Jennifer R. Madden described Williams as “heliotropic,” someone who lit up and energized any room he walked into.
“While Professor Williams may be best known for bringing the Ironman Triathlon to Oregon, at the School of Business we recognize him for his innovative support and outstanding contributions,” she later wrote. “Professor Williams championed the launch of Front Office Sports. This innovative program gives students the opportunity to partner with and work for impressive organizations in the sports industry. His commitment to the success of Linfield students to ensure valuable experiences in sport management is a game-changer for Linfield.”
He is survived by his wife Genesis and son Everson. All are welcome to attend his memorial service, which will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at Willamette University’s Cone Field House, 953 Mill St. SE in Salem.
