TRICK-OR-TREAT TOURS OFFERED
Local children will be offered a safe and fun way to celebrate Halloween when Linfield College students host the annual trick-or-treat tour of campus, Friday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
McMinnville-area children are invited to trick-or-treat participating residence halls, sponsored by Resident Life and the Residence Hall Executive Council. Linfield students will lead the tours beginning in the Fred Meyer Lounge in Riley Hall. Parents must accompany their children.

HALLOWEEN PUMPKIN PATCH PLANNED
Linfield Wildcats are invited to a Halloween gathering on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 1-5 p.m. at the Big Red Barn at Sauvie Island’s Pumpkin Patch. Join friends, students, alumni and colleagues for holiday snacks, face painting, a costume contest (kids, adults and dogs) and the famous Mysterious Linfield Loot raffle. John Stapleton, local musician and troubadour, will perform from 2-4 p.m. Bring family and friends and enjoy (no host) the Pumpkin Patch offerings including the produce market, hayrides, the corn maze (Haunted Field of Screams from 7-10 p.m.), petting zoo and more.

AUTHOR TO PRESENT CAREER TALK
Author John Gottberg Anderson will provide insight to a writing career on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the Fred Meyer Lounge in Riley Hall.
Anderson, an author of travel books and a freelance travel writer, restaurant critic and photographer, will speak about his career and the challenges of freelance writing. DANIEL TO GIVE READING AT THE NICK
Award-winning author John Daniel will share his journey through life when he reads from a collection of personal essays, titled “The Far Corner: Northwestern Views on Land, Life and Literature.”
The reading will be held on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Austin Reading Room of Nicholson Library at Linfield College.
Daniel’s latest book explores subjects in the human and more-than-human worlds, in an attempt to understand and define his allegiances to home, country and life. These lyrical essays range from topics concerning his experience as an author, the biodiversity of Pacific Northwest forests and rivers, authors Ken Kesey and Wallace Stegner, and the mysteries of death.
Author of nine books of poetry, essays and a memoir, Daniel won the 2006 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award for “Rogue River Journal,” two Oregon Book Awards and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. Daniel is also a former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and James Thurber Writer-in-Residence at Ohio State University.
Daniel received his undergraduate degree from Reed College and his Master of Arts in English and creative writing from Stanford University. Notable works include “Looking After: A Son’s Memoir,” “Oregon Rivers” and “Common Ground,” and Daniel has published in several magazines and literary journals.

THEATRE TO LAUNCH ‘A DOLL’S HOUSE’
A new spin on a traditional play will create a unique viewing experience for theatre audiences at Linfield College.
“A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen will be performed Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 5-7, and Nov. 12-14, at 8 p.m. in the Marshall Theatre in Ford Hall at Linfield. Another performance will be offered on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m.
The actors will perform in a Victorian-style dollhouse, with the audience sitting on all four sides looking through the windows of the house. Ibsen wrote the play in 1879, and Frank McGuiness later adapted it into a successful work embraced around the country. The play focuses on Nora, a woman who must reevaluate her marriage after the truth of her relationship with Torvald, her husband, is exposed. Nora’s determination to discover her own self-worth and to forge a new identity by leaving her husband and children created an uproar when it debuted and remains one of the most famous and scandalous dramas of the 19th century.
Janet Gupton, associate professor of theatre arts and resident director, will direct a cast of eight Linfield students. The cast ensemble includes Linfield freshmen Christopher Forrer and Caitlyn Olson; sophomores Bailey Maxwell and Andrew Purcell; juniors Chris Lambert and Sharon Hagel; and seniors William DeBiccari and Jessica Learn. Also joining the cast are Hunter Svec-Orr and Jacob Harmon who play the Helmer children.
Tickets are $9 for full price; $7 for non-Linfield students, seniors, Linfield faculty and staff; and $5 for Linfield students. A $2 discount for all tickets will mark opening night. The box office is open Tuesday through Friday from 3 to 5 p.m., and until 8 p.m. on performance days. EAST MEETS WEST IN MUSIC ENSEMBLE
Virtuoso string ensemble Red Chamber and world music artist Randy Raine-Reusch will perform Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Ice Auditorium at Linfield College.
“Red Chamber: Secrets of the Chinese Court, Passions of the West” is free and the public is invited.
The ensemble stretches the boundaries of traditional Asian music with a spicy fusion that spans centuries, world cultures and musical genres. Its repertoire is inspired by ancient Chinese court music and blended with Balkan, gypsy, jazz, American old-time and bluegrass traditions, along with adventurous free-form music.
World music composer and performer Randy Raine-Reusch will appear as guest artist. An innovator interested in extending the boundaries of music, he has created distinct new styles on a number of world instruments from his collection of 700. The Red Chamber ensemble is led by Mei Han, a groundbreaking performer renowned for taking the plucked Chinese zheng in adventurous new directions.
The concert is co-sponsored by the Linfield Department of Music and the International Programs Office and made possible by the generosity of the Freeman Foundation. The foundation sponsors the China in McMinnville program to enhance Chinese culture and studies at Linfield.

Edna Kovacs, adjunct professor in the English Language and Culture Program, is the author of a collection of poetry and prompts for journal writing, “In a Place Called Sanctuary – Writings from a Healing Garden.” It was published by Palabras Press and includes original photographs by the author. Kovacs has taught in the English Department and in the English Language and Culture Program (formerly ESL) since 1990. She holds a Ph.D in Expressive Arts with a specialization in Multicultural Education from the Union Institute and University.
Gennie Harris and Mindy Larson, both assistant professors of education, along with colleagues from Pacific University and Oregon State University, published an article in the November issue of Qualitative Inquiry, “Trying on—being in—becoming: Four women’s ‘intergenerational’ journal in feminist poststructural theory.”
