OREGON’S POET LAUREATE TO READ
Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen will discuss the role of poet laureate and read selected poems Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the Austin Reading Room in the Jereld R. Nicholson Library.
Petersen, who has presented readings in places that range from Oregon to India, will showcase poems from her various published works, including her most recently published collection, The Voluptuary. Petersen has lived her entire life in Oregon as a housewife, mother and eventually public high school teacher. She taught English at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls for eight years, publishing a number of poems in literary journals, with her first poem being published in The Oregonian. Petersen won a Wallace Stegner Fellowship and spent a year at Stanford studying with poets including Adrienne Rich and Grace Paley and has since been published in numerous magazines and her own publications. Her poetry can also be seen on TriM et buses in Portland as a part of Poetry in Motion.
Petersen was named Oregon’s sixth Poet Laureate April 26, 2010 by Governor Ted Kulongoski. The Poet Laureate program is a collaborative project of the state’s five cultural partners: Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage Commission, Oregon Historical Society, Oregon Humanities and the State Historic Preservation Office, and is funded by the Oregon Cultural Trust.

TRANS-HEALTH DAY SET IN PORTLAND
Trans-Health Day will be held Monday, Nov. 29, on the Linfield Portland Campus.
Events will focus on providing knowledgeable health services to the transgender community with a focus on dignity and improving the medical experience for individuals. Following a noon lunch in the Peterson Hall Gallery, a panel discussion will be held in 110 Peterson Hall. Speakers include Zan Gibbs, social rights advocate; Solomon Butch Greenblatt, trans-identified nurse and educator; Jose Miguel, student nurse and Outside-In TransHealth Clinic coordinator; and Suzanne Scopes, a naturopathic physician and medical director of the Outside-In clinic.

THETAS BEGIN 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
Theta Chi Fraternity at Linfield College will collect donations for two adopted families and individual gift tags when they kick off their annual “Theta Chi 12 Days of Christmas” Nov. 29 through Dec. 10 at the college.
Brothers of the Delta Alpha chapter of Theta Chi will be on hand around the clock during the 12-day period to serve refreshments and accept donations at a recreational vehicle parked near Dillin Hall. Sodexo Inc., the Linfield food service contractor, is donating refreshments throughout the event.
There will be a giving tree outside the vehicle with gift tags and the fraternity is adopting two families. Donations of any kind are appreciated and can be made at any time, said Justin Williams, Theta Chi philanthropy chair coordinating the event. In addition to financial contributions, the 47-member fraternity will collect items such as food, clothing, toys, school supplies and sports equipment. Proceeds will benefit the Yamhill Community Action Partnership.
Assisting the community and local organizations has always been a priority for Theta Chi. “It makes you feel good to be able to help people in need, especially during the holiday season,” said Williams. “12 Days of Christmas is a special event because it gives us the opportunity to directly contribute to those around us by donating all our contributions locally.”
The 12 Days of Christmas is one of the biggest philanthropy events of any organization at Linfield. Theta Chi has more than 150 chapters across the nation and has been on the Linfield campus for over 70 years.

JURIED SHOW FEATURES STUDENT ART
Artwork by Linfield College students will be on display during the Juried Student Exhibition, Dec. 1-18, at the Fine Art Gallery in the James F. Miller Fine Arts Center. An opening reception will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. in the gallery.
Organizers anticipate a variety of student art including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and electronic media. All Linfield students were invited to submit a maximum of three pieces to be judged.
The work will be judged by D.K. Row, visual arts critic for the Oregonian since 2002. Row was born and raised in the Los Angeles area and attended Columbia University in New York City, N.Y. Also judging is Nils Lou, Linfield professor of ceramics and sculptures. Lou attended the University of Michigan and has displayed in exhibits across the country.
The Linfield exhibit is free and open to the public. The Linfield Fine Art Gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. To reach the gallery, from 99W in south McMinnville, turn east on Keck Drive at the McMinnville Market Center and turn right into the first parking lot. MEXICAN REVOLUTION FOCUS OF DAY
A day-long event will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution and its Legacy Thursday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Jonasson Hall, lower level of Melrose Hall at Linfield.
A group of Linfield faculty and students will give presentations on various aspects of the Mexican Revolution of 1910 and its impact on Mexican society including politics, institutions and the arts. A potluck lunch will be held from noon to 1 p.m. A poster session will run throughout the day, in addition to four presentations. Presentations include:
• 12:15 p.m.: Sharon Glasco, associate professor of history, “Historical and Cultural Perspectives on the Mexican Revolution”
• 2 p.m.: Bill Bestor, associate professor of anthropology, “The Mexican Revolution Was a Real Revolution: Impacts on Health and Education: Views from the Zapata “Revolution of the South” as seen in Tepoztlan, Morelos and Elsewhere”
• 3:15 p.m.: Jeff Peterson, associate professor of sociology, with Denisse Chacón ‘11, “The Revolution & Social Movements: the Case of Zapatismo”
• 4:30 p.m.: Violeta Ramsay, associate professor of Spanish, with students from MLSP 290/1 class, “The Muralists of the 1920s and their Legacy as Seen in the Chicano Movement,” co-sponsored by MDLA, HISTORY & SOAN Departments

LCO CONCERT TO SPOTLIGHT STUDENTS
The Linfield Chamber Orchestra will feature student concerto competition winners in a performance Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium.
The performance will include the overture to the opera “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” by Otto Nicolai. Derived from the Shakespeare play of the same name, the overture is a humorous pastiche of some of the best melodies of the opera.
The concert will conclude with the “Symphony No. 1 in B flat major, Op. 38 (Spring)” by Robert Schumann. The composition was Schumann’s first symphonic work and illustrates his sense of longing for spring.
Linfield students Jeremy Moll ‘13, baritone, and Ryan Dickman ‘11, saxophone, were the winners of the Linfield College Department of Music concerto competition and will be the featured guest artists. Michael Gesme will conduct.
“This concert is always a treat because of the excitement generated by these talented students,” said Board President Nora Stevens.
A collaboration of the Linfield College Department of Music and the community, the McMinnville-based orchestra now attracts guest artists and professional musicians from across Oregon, southwest Washington and the world.

Miriam Volpin, visiting assistant professor of nursing, presented a paper “Mind the Gap: Family Caregivers’ of Assisted Living Residents Perceptions of Hospice” at the Gerontological Society of America’s 63rd Annual Scientific Meeting in New Orleans, La., Nov. 20 as part of the Assisted Living Interest Group’s sponsored symposium. The study explored the role family caregivers fill in providing end-of-life care to family members living in assisted living facilities.
Sandy Soohoo-Refaei, associate director of International Programs, is a reviewer for the upcoming NAFSA conference workshop sessions and proposals for the Knowledge Community for International Students and Scholar Services, which will be held in Vancouver, B.C., Canada in May 2011. She has also been invited to serve on the national selection panel for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Wendy Sagers, adjunct professor of English Language and Culture, presented a session on “Conversation Partners and Joint Projects” at the Oregon Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages fall conference in Portland on Nov. 12. She discussed how Linfield’s ELC and Modern Languages instructors coordinate on-going conversation partners and two-week joint projects to maximize student interaction with native speakers.
