‘The Tempest’ with a twist continues at Marshall Theatre

The Tempest, Linfield College TheatreThe Linfield Theatre Program is putting a new twist on the classic Shakespeare play “The Tempest,” while addressing issues of sustainability.

“The Tempest” will be presented Nov. 12-14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Marshall Theatre in Ford Hall. The production will continue the exploration of Linfield’s PLACE (Program for Liberal Arts and Civic Engagement) theme, “Air, Water, Earth, and Fire: the ancient elements on a changing planet,” by setting the action on a man-made island of trash. On this island, Prospero uses his magic to harness the ancient elements for his own power but ultimately realizes that doing so can create irreparable harm to him and the island’s inhabitants. The local inhabitants have learned to survive on the debris of humankind’s massive waste, only to be usurped of their home’s resources by Prospero and daughter Miranda who themselves have been exiled from their own homeland.

Janet Gupton, associate professor of theatre arts, will direct the play with scenic and lighting design by Professor Ty Marshall, sound design by Rob Vaughn, and costume design by visiting guest designer Alethia Moore-Del Monaco.

“This exciting and daunting idea of putting sustainability to work on a micro-level through our theatre program will hopefully resonate with students, faculty and staff as we search for ways to rethink our usage of materials and natural resources,” Gupton said.

In keeping with the PLACE theme, the set and costume designs will incorporate the use of recycled and found materials in an effort to practice sustainability and reduce our carbon footprint.

Lead cast members include junior Robert Murphy Jackson from Hood River, who will play Prospero; sophomore Christina Godinez from Redwood City, Calif., who will play Miranda; junior Madilyn Bechtel from Kirkland, Wash., and freshman Glenn Rust from Cottage Grove, who will both play Ariel; and freshman Antoine Johnson from Hoquiam, Wash., who will play Caliban.

Other cast members include senior Travis McKenna from Elko, Nev.; juniors Joella Cordell from Caldwell, Idaho, Alyssa Lawrence from Dorchester, Mass., and Bailey Sipila from Seattle, Wash.; sophomores Zach Knight from San Francisco, Calif., Raisa Mlynski from Hillsboro, Marcos Galvez from Hood River, Sierra-Karen Denend from Moxee, Wash., and Cassandra Martinez from Woodburn; freshmen Heather McNutt-Kaestner from Philomath, Alex Satterlee from Hillsboro, and Dennis Waske from Eugene; and Clément Hossaert, language teaching assistant, of Armentieres, France.

This is the Linfield Theatre’s 96th season of plays at Linfield and 13th season in the Marshall Theatre. This play is a PLACE event.

Tickets are $9 for full price; $7 for seniors (62+) and Linfield faculty and staff (two tickets per ID); and $5 for students (any age, any school, one ticket per ID); with a $2 discount on all tickets on opening night. Seating is reserved. Tickets are available online at www.linfield.edu/arts and at the Marshall Theatre Box Office. For more information call 503-883-2292.

Afternoon of piano trios set

Albert Kim, assistant professor of musicThe Linfield College Department of Music will present a concert of piano trios on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 4 p.m. in Ice Auditorium.

The program will feature pianist Albert Kim, violinist Julie Rosenfeld and cellist Diane Chaplin performing Ludwig van Beethoven’s magisterial “Archduke” Trio, Dmitri Shostakovich’s wartime lament Trio no. 2 and David Baker’s “Roots II,” a jazz-inspired celebration of American musical traditions from the spiritual to the boogie-woogie.

Kim, assistant professor of music at Linfield, made his professional debut at age 10, when he substituted on a day’s notice for an ailing Vladimir Horowitz to give the inaugural performance on the 500,000th Steinway piano at Carnegie Hall. He has performed throughout the United States and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician, with performances at Weill Hall, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Konzerthaus Wien, the Köln Philharmonie, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and more. Kim has collaborated in chamber and ensemble performances with Ensemble Signal, Eastman Musica Nova, Charles Castleman, Colin Jacobsen, Edward Arron, the Argos Piano Trio, the Tabletop Opera and fellow Linfield professor Anton Belov. He has coached chamber music at Linfield College and UNC Chapel Hill and serves as a music mentor for Linfield’s thriving ensemble education program.

As the first violinist of the Colorado Quartet, Rosenfeld played more than 1,200 concerts, touring throughout the United States and Canada, and in more than 20 other countries. Rosenfeld joined the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Music in 2014, and became a member of the Esterhazy String Quartet. She attended the Curtis Institute, received her bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Southern California, and her master’s degree from Yale University. Rosenfeld has served on juries for the Astral Foundation, the Juilliard School, the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation, the Banff International String Quartet Competition, the Coleman Chamber Music Competition and the Concert Artists Guild Competition, and has taught at the European Mozart Academy in Poland.

Chaplin, adjunct professor of music at Linfield, is a solo artist and chamber music cellist, a music educator and conductor. She has performed with the Sunnyside Symphony, the Venerable Showers of Beauty Gamelan at Lewis and Clark College, Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the Clark College Orchestra. Chaplin is a featured member and director of educational outreach of the Portland Cello Project. She is the director and conductor of Rose City Youth Orchestras, a chamber orchestra and chamber music training program, and is on the faculty at Linfield College and Lewis and Clark College. She is program coordinator for the Chamber Music Camp of Portland, where she conducts the advanced chamber orchestra and chamber music master classes.

This performance is sponsored by the Lacroute Arts Series at Linfield College, made possible by the generosity of Ronni Lacroute, Linfield College trustee and arts benefactor. The series is dedicated to helping the college present art events and activities for the campus and community. It provides programs featuring artists in the areas of music, art and visual culture, and theatre and communication arts.

Creative duo to discuss poetry, art at faculty lecture

Professors Ron Mills and Lex RuncimanTwo Linfield College professors, a poet and a painter, will muse about how they create at an upcoming faculty lecture.

Lex Runciman, professor of English, and Ron Mills de Pinyas, professor of art, will present “Making Paintings, Making Poems” on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in 201 Riley Hall.

The two will lead a dialogue, one that is in part between two arts – painting and the writing of poems – and in part between two artists. They will discuss improvisation, inspiration and the value of art and writing at an intellectual institution. They will also talk about how they start their work and the flow of their respective processes. Mills de Pinyas will show a montage of images from three series, including mural work, commissions and studio painting. Runciman will share poems of previous work.

“We’re interested in exploring ways that these two arts, and their ongoing practice, might echo or inform or even diverge from each other,” said Runciman. “How do paintings and poems happen?”

Runciman, at Linfield since 1992, has published textbooks, anthologies and five books of poetry. His most recent work, “One Hour That Morning and Other Poems,” was published this year and his work has appeared widely in magazines. He also reviews books on his blog, The Far Corner Reader. Runciman has twice been the recipient of the Edith Green Distinguished Professorship Award, recognizing a senior faculty member who demonstrates sustained excellence in the classroom, and he has also received the Julie Olds and Thomas Hellie Creative Achievement Award recognizing outstanding creative work.

Mills de Pinyas, a member of the Linfield faculty since 1979, is an artist, professor and researcher. His art work has been supported by the Fulbright Scholar Program and exhibited across the U.S. and in Asia and Latin America. One of his mural series was inaugurated at the Hallie Ford Center at Oregon State University, and supported and administered by the Oregon Arts Commission. He was the recipient of the Julie Olds and Thomas Hellie Creative Achievement Award recognizing outstanding creative work, and also received the Edith Green Distinguished Professorship Award in 1994. Mills was honored for longevity and the sustained level of productivity throughout his career at Linfield, in addition to the influence of his work, both nationally and internationally.
