BE SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Each year fires occurring during the holiday season claim the lives of over 400 people, injure 1,650 more, and cause over $990 million in damage. Follow these simple life-saving steps to ensure a safe and happy holiday.
Christmas tree safety
• Don’t place trees near a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The tree will be dry and more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks.
• Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.
• Discard the tree promptly when dry. Take it to a recycling center or call a community pick-up service.
Holiday lights and decorations
• Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in the insulation, broken or cracked sockets, and excessive kinking or wear before putting them up.
• Do not link more than three light strands, unless the directions allow. Connect lights to an extension cord before plugging the cord into the outlet.
• All decorations should be nonflammable or flame-retardant and placed away from heat vents.
• If using a metallic or artificial tree, make sure it is flame retardant.
• Avoid using lit candles. If used, secure in stable holders and do not leave candles burning unattended.
• Do not go near a Christmas tree with an open flame.
• Install working smoke alarms on every level of your home, test them monthly, and keep them clean and equipped with fresh batteries.
Crime Watch – Remove valuables from your car and lock the car doors. When valuables must be kept in the car, lock them in the trunk. Criminals will break car windows to see what is inside.
Driving Safety – The holiday season often has difficult weather and many parties. Not necessarily a good mix. Use designated drivers. Carry safety equipment in the trunk, including sleeping bags, snacks and water.
Mental Health – The season of gladness and joy can also be a season of stress and anxiety. The flurry of social activities, work, concerns about family visits, financial strain and travel anxieties can all be a mental drain. Take time for yourself.
