Four members of The Linfield Review’s staff won awards in the 2025 Collegiate News Contest held by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. Congratulations to:

  • Jake Downing ’25, photography editor, who earned first and third place in the Best Sports Photo category for “OSAA 5A basketball championships” and “Linfield football v. Lewis and Clark.”
  • Amelia Solt ’26, sports editor, who earned first place in the Best Sports Writing category for “NBA veteran CJ McCollum made his Linfield debut.”
  • Mariah Johnston ’25, managing editor, who earned third place in the Best Feature Writing category for “Nail Check: Overcoming Anxiety and Finding Connection.”
  • Kenny McMillen ’26, staff writer, who earned third place in the Best Columnist category for “Leaf Blowers Harming Students.”

Founded in 1896, The Linfield Review is one of the oldest college newspapers in the Pacific Northwest. Published online, The Linfield Review reports news to Linfield students, serves as an outlet for student opinion and provides hands-on training and experience in producing journalism.

This is not the first recognition for The Linfield Review and students in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. Last year, two students — including Johnston — earned prestigious internships through the Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism. In 2023, The Linfield Review received nine awards from the Pacific Northwest Association of Journalism Educators annual competition.

The Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association (ONPA) is a trade association composed of weekly and daily paid-circulation newspapers serving large cities and small communities across the state. It represents the common interests of Oregon newspapers, to promote the value of newspaper advertising, and to further the public’s understanding that strong newspapers are the cornerstone of a democratic society.
