Linfield College student curator Barrett Dahl will open her anthropology exhibit, “An Ceoil na Éireann: The Generation Dichotomy of Music in Galway Ireland,” Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 12:30 p.m. in the Anthropology Museum in Walker Hall at Linfield.
Dahl gathered information for this exhibit in Galway and Dublin while living abroad in Ireland during the spring semester of 2010.
“Ireland is not something one can just read about,” said Dahl, a senior.
An Ceoil na Éireann, or “The Music of Ireland,” is an audio exhibit and exploration of the thoughts and sentiments of the older and younger generations of Galway, Ireland. The exhibit is designed to explain the musical culture of Galway and the people who value its influence in their heritage and their future.
“If people are intrigued or inspired to visit Ireland, or learn more about it because of my exhibit I will feel that I have accomplished my goal,” said Dahl. “I want this exhibit to be an educational and cultural learning experience for all its visitors.”
Dahl is staging the exhibit for her senior thesis, and decided to use the Linfield Anthropology Museum because it is “an interesting place on campus.”
The mission of the Linfield Anthropology Museum is to collect, preserve and exhibit objects of ethnographic importance. It provides students with opportunities for training and practice within the field of museum work and engages the public and the Linfield community through student-prepared exhibits.
The opening will feature Dahl and Keni Sturgeon, adjunct professor, and Tom Love, professor of anthropology. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Dec. 10.
