Linfield students get taste of service

October 3, 2013 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Taste of ServiceLinfield College students spread out throughout the community during Linfield’s Taste of Service Day Saturday, Sept. 21, harvesting food, collecting donations at Roths and Grocery Outlet, clearing the Wellness Trail and helping out local non-profit organizations.

Some 150 students worked with 13 local organizations including YCAP, Homeward Bound, Walnut City Homestead, Habitat for Humanity and the McMinnville Community Garden, according to Jenny Morgan of the Linfield College Community Engagement and Service office.

“It was wonderful to see such a diverse group of students collaborating outside of the academic setting,” said Morgan, a 2013 Linfield graduate. “Engaging in community service is meaningful. When you see students working hard and having a good time at the service sites, it fosters a fantastic attitude towards service-learning for the year. I hope that momentum doesn’t slow down any time soon.”

Linfield was named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll in recognition of leadership in civic engagement and service learning during the 2011-12 academic year. This is the sixth consecutive year Linfield has been recognized by the national organization, which highlights the role colleges play in addressing local and global issues.

The next opportunity to volunteer is Saturday, Oct. 26, for Make a Difference Day, a nation-wide service day. Stop by the Community Engagement and Service office in 301 Riley or call Morgan at 503-883-2326 to learn more.
