Linfield students honor King through community service

March 3, 2014 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

MLK Day of ServiceNearly 100 Linfield College students reached out to Yamhill County youth and seniors for a day of service to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Saturday, Feb. 22. Watch a slideshow.

The event featured two main activities: an educational component with local elementary students and a service project in local senior centers and retirement communities.

Under the mentorship of Linfield students, several Yamhill County elementary students took part in the day, which included sessions on sustainability, education and wellness. Students spent time in the Linfield garden, learning about planting and growing peas; learned about Martin Luther King, Jr., and helped decorate a large posters; and were given tips on wellness and learned new games with the help of the Linfield women’s soccer team. In addition, Linfield students worked with residents at Vineyard Heights Assisted Living in McMinnville, recording their memories and creating memory books for the residents. Other Linfield students worked at Miller Woods.

Rather than being held on MLK Day in January, the Linfield service event was held in February, during Black History Month, when students were back on campus for spring semester, according to junior Brie Battle, Black Student Union president.

Linfield faculty and students utilize service-learning as a learning strategy throughout the year. Learn more about Community Engagement and Service at Linfield.
