Linfield College students volunteered their time to improve the McMinnville community during Global Youth Service Day on Saturday, April 25.
More than 80 Linfield students pulled on gloves and boots to improve three community gardens and a local park. They worked at several local projects including the McMinnville Community Garden, Hope on the Hill, Tice Woods and the Linfield Garden.
All three gardens have planting beds available for the community and grow food for local food pantries. At Tice Woods, they removed noxious weeds like English ivy and cleared blackberries to restore native habitat. Once the weeds are removed, native plants will spring up in their place, organizers explained.
Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that celebrates and mobilizes youth to improve their community. The celebration was established in 1988 and is the largest service event in the world, celebrated in over 100 countries. This event gives youth the power to focus on the world’s most critical issues and move towards improvement. Global Youth Service Day will highlight the role that youth play in their communities around the world and address the current needs of our local community through various done-in-a-day service projects that focus on sustainability.
At Linfield, the day was sponsored by the Community Engagement and Service Office and the Office of Sustainability in honor of Earth Week.
