The Linfield University Theatre Program earned statewide recognition last month from the state’s organization for secondary school theatre. Oregon Thespians and the Oregon Theatre Educators Association named Linfield the 2025 recipient of the Rae Mona Reynolds Humanitarian for the Arts Award.
The honor recognizes individuals or organizations that have unselfishly donated time or resources to advance secondary school theatre in Oregon. The award’s namesake, Rae Mona Reynolds, taught theatre at David Douglas High School for more than 30 years before her passing in 1990. The award is not necessarily a lifetime achievement honor. Instead, it celebrates meaningful and generous contributions — whether through long-term efforts or a single act of support.
“Over the past six years, the Linfield University Theatre Program has donated thousands of hours to Oregon high schools and Oregon Thespians in support of secondary school theatre,” said Tiffany Carstensen, Oregon Thespians State Festival Director and board member of the Oregon Theatre Educators Association.
In addition to taking college productions on the road, Linfield professors tour high school theatre spaces, offering expert advice on low-cost, high-impact improvements like lighting, sound and storage. They also mentor teachers and lead professional development in design, equity and inclusive practices. Additionally, Linfield faculty, staff and students work with high school students, coaching them on college applications and audition prep.
“Theatre is about connection, growth and generosity,” said Derek Lane, assistant professor of theatre arts at Linfield. “We’re proud to support Oregon’s high school educators and students — not just because they’re the future of theatre, but because they’re already making powerful contributions to the arts right now.”
Linfield received the award at the annual Oregon Thespians State Festival. Linfield is a consistent and enthusiastic presence at the event. The program has facilitated more than 60 free workshops, offered professional headshots for student performers and volunteered year after year.
“Without a doubt, everyone in Linfield University’s Theatre Program are truly humanitarians for the arts,” Carstensen said. “They have given incredible talent, time and resources to Oregon Thespians.”
For prospective students interested in performance, design, directing or education, Linfield Theatre offers a collaborative and hands-on experience from day one.
The program is known for its bold storytelling, student-centered approach and strong alumni network.
“We don’t just invite high school students to our campus — we go to them, and we listen,” Lane said. “That’s how partnerships start, and how we build a stronger theatre community for everyone.”
