E-learning has its advantages, especially for returning students, Linfield’s dean of Continuing Education told the Portland Business Journal.
Online education is convenient and flexible, Dean Kate Bemis says.
“For a nurse who’s just finished four 12-hour shifts, it’s not feasible to try to be at a class every night for 12 or 15 weeks,” says Bemis. “The idea of taking a class at your own convenience has tremendous advantages.”
Students are sometimes more likely to participate in virtual discussions than face-to-face classroom conversations, she says.
Applications from students seeking online courses at Linfield have jumped 43 percent since 2008.
Linfield offers seven online degrees, including management, accounting, social and behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, international business and business information systems.
The school also offers an online program that allows registered nurses to earn Bachelor of Science nursing degrees. The virtual program is accompanied by hands-on, clinical experience.
