Marginalized voices featured in Linfield faculty recital

October 8, 2020 by Ben O'Loughlin

By Ben O'Loughlin

Marginalized Voices Faculty RecitalFaculty members from the Linfield University Department of Music are performing a free afternoon recital highlighting the work of women composers at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. The concert, “Unity,” will be livestreamed on the Linfield University YouTube page.

“This program is a celebration of women’s voices,” said Abigail Sperling, a flute instructor at Linfield who will be performing at the recital. “By featuring women and women of color, our faculty hope to contribute to a wider discussion about race and gender through our art.”

The program includes a jazz set from the repertoire of Ella Fitzgerald and Vera Lynn, recent works from American composers and a newly written duet by Valerie Coleman, “Fanmi Imèn,” based on Maya Angelou’s poem, “Human Family.”

The recital features Anton Belov, baritone; Richard Krishnan, bassoon and baritone saxophone; Julie Cross, piano and voice; Dana Libonati, piano; and Sperling, flute.

“This will be a short, enjoyable program with both familiar tunes and something new,” Sperling said. “It is sure to be an engaging afternoon.”
