Linfield College junior Sarah Mason of Vancouver, Wash., will spend her summer working side-by-side with professional journalists at The Daily Astorian newspaper. Mason was selected for the prestigious Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism.
Out of 78 applicants, Mason was one of 16 journalism students from across Oregon to be selected for the internship program. The Charles Snowden Program for Excellence in Journalism is based at the University of Oregon, and was established in 1998 in honor of Charles Snowden, a longtime editor at the Oregon Journal and The Oregonian.
At The Daily Astorian, Mason will work as a reporter and hopes to learn more about the essential skills required to write and work for a newspaper. Mason said she has only worked for bi-weekly and weekly newspapers and looks forward to gaining experience at a daily newspaper.
“I am interested in journalism because I enjoy storytelling and talking with people that I would have never met otherwise,” said Mason. “I am a very curious individual so being able to learn about what makes a person unique or why they are passionate about what they are doing is incredibly interesting to me.”
Mason, a mass communication major and psychology minor, is the risk management chair for Phi Sigma Sigma sorority and is an environmental health and safety assistant for her work study position at Linfield. She also works as a part-time sports reporter for the Yamhill Valley News-Register. Mason will study abroad this fall in Norway, where she will take classes in journalism.
Mason is the daughter of Vern and Joanne Mason of Vancouver, Wash. Following her graduation from Linfield, she hopes to combine her love for travel with her passion for storytelling.
