Daniel Helfgot, author and noted opera director, will give a master class in techniques of interpretation for singers Thursday, April 5, at 4 p.m. in the Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian A. Bull Music Center at Linfield College.
Helfgot is the author of “The Third Line: The Singer as Interpreter.” The book stresses interpretation and proposes that performers develop a “third line” that naturally derives from the interaction of the two lines provided by the librettist and the composer. This third line includes subtext, focus, movement, facial expression and vocal inflection.
Helfgot will be in residence at Linfield April 4-6 and will coach students on scenes for the Opera Workshop recital in May. His credits include more than 200 productions of operas, operettas and zarzuelas around the world. In the U.S., he has directed for such companies as Festival Opera in California, the Pennsylvania Festival, the Western Opera Theater of San Francisco, Virginia Opera and more.
His visit is made possible through support from the Lacroute Arts Series at Linfield College which supports the Departments of Art and Visual Culture, Music, and Theatre and Communication Arts in their efforts to produce and present arts events for the Linfield and McMinnville communities. The series provides quality arts experiences featuring distinguished visiting artists.
This event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.linfield.edu/arts or call 503-883-2275.
