Linfield Math Modeling teamLinfield College mathematics students earned high marks in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, according to results released recently. The contest was sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications in February.

Three Linfield teams, a total of nine students, competed in the annual international competition for undergraduates. Over the course of a weekend, teams are challenged to clarify, analyze and propose solutions to an open-ended problem. Teams receive the problem Thursday and submit their papers Monday.

One Linfield team, made up of seniors Kara Grant, a math and economics major from McMinnville; Kyle Evitts, a math major from Corvallis; and Nathan Mills, a computer science and math major from Salem, earned “meritorious” for their paper, “Dukes of Hazardous Lane Changes.” The designation placed them in the top 11 percent of all papers submitted for the competition.

Other Linfield participants include seniors Addison Wisthoff of Sherwood, Andrew Tan of Malaysia and Nicholas Fairhart of Morton, Wash.; junior Alexander Ogle of Banks; sophomore James Knox of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and freshman Lauren Devore of Vancouver, Wash. Michael Hitchman, associate professor of mathematics, is the faculty advisor.

The contest featured 6,755 teams representing 18 institutions. Of those teams, 391 were from U.S. institutions.
