Milander earns broadcasting scholarship

Linfield College junior Max Milander of Seaside received a scholarship from the Oregon Association of Broadcasters.

Milander, a mass communications major, has been involved in broadcasting at Linfield as a sportscaster for KSLC, Linfield’s student-run radio station. The Oregon Association of Broadcasters Scholarship is awarded annually to students of high achievement in academics and broadcasting. He received the award at the annual Oregon Association of Broadcasters banquet and award ceremony Sept. 7 in Eugene.

Milander developed his passion for broadcasting at Linfield, finding opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

“I was inspired to check out a handheld voice recorder from the library and practice calling basketball games myself at Ted Wilson Gymnasium,” said Milander. “The first time I did it, I knew my heart was in the right place and I started to think about broadcasting sports for a living.”

Milander is eager to meet and exceed every challenge presented to him, according to Michael Huntsberger, assistant professor of mass communication and Milander’s academic advisor.

“Max is an honest, curious, thoughtful and achievement-oriented individual with a strong drive to succeed,” said Huntsberger.

Milander recognizes the $2,500 scholarship will financially support his education but hopes it will also benefit his career goals.

“Future employers could see I won this scholarship, increasing my chances of landing a sports broadcasting job,” said Milander. “This is my dream and I’ll do anything to keep it alive.”
