Linfield College nursing student Katy Sharman had a first-hand look at the challenges of providing healthcare in countries with limited resources when she spent January in the African nation of Cameroon. Her experience was profiled in a story in the Lake Oswego Review.
During her time in Cameroon, Sharman, along with nine other Linfield nursing students and two faculty members, worked in schools and provided health assessments on students. This included examining each student from head to toe to check their health. Sharman admitted that most of the experience was heartbreaking, but it also taught her to never take anything for granted. What’s more, her experience in Cameroon reaffirmed her choice to work with children as a nurse instead of as a doctor.
Sharman has also participated in other service opportunities including serving on church mission trips and in soup kitchens.
