New book from Linfield prof helps arts grads craft career

Professor Emerita Jill TimmonsA new book by Jill Timmons, who taught music at Linfield College for three decades and now serves as professor emerita, is getting rave reviews from arts and career reporters around the U.S.

Many musicians and artists think that if they go to the right school, study hard enough, and lock themselves in practice rooms, they should be able find professional success, Timmons says.

After a fruitless search for a book that would help her students and clients craft careers in the arts, she decided to write her own. The Musician’s Journey: Crafting Your Career Vision and Plan shows aspiring musicians and artists how to develop nuts-and-bolts career strategies that will help them transition from idealism to successful careers. The book was recently published by Oxford University Press.

Timmons has an international reputation as an arts management consultant through her company, Artsmentor, LLC. Her piano performances have been aired on NPR, and she has toured the U.S. under the auspices of the National Endowment for the Arts and performed throughout Europe and in Chile. She has numerous recordings to her credit, and Ken Burns chose music from her Amy Beach recording for his documentary, “The War.”

Check out some career tips from Timmons!
