Not your everyday debate tournament

October 15, 2011 by Linfield News Team

By Linfield News Team

Last weekend, Linfield students attended class within the walls of the Oregon State Penitentiary, where they engaged prison inmates in debate about the economy, healthcare reform, and scholarships for inmates.

Professor Jackson Miller, director of Linfield’s forensics program, facilitated the debate tournament in the Salem, Ore., penitentiary. He worked closely with the prison Toastmasters Club to organize the event.

The debates featured inmate teams and college students and professors from schools in the area.

Miller is a trainer for the International Debate Education Association, which sponsors debate forums for high school and college students from around the world.
