Choirs and bands, original works and timeless classics – the Linfield University Department of Music has something for every music lover during the month of November. Face coverings and proof of vaccination are required for all events.
The Linfield Concert Choir, Wildcat Men’s Glee Club and Cascara Voce start the month with a Fall Choir Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 2 in the Richard and Lucile Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall. The free event features a wide range of selections, including excerpts from the “Requiem in D minor” by Gabriel Fauré, “Five Hebrew Love Songs” by Eric Whitacre, and “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, as well as sea chanteys, folk songs and other popular favorites.
“The Fall Choral Concert celebrates our return to live choral music, something we haven’t been able to experience since February 2020,” said Anna Song, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music and director of choirs.
On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Linfield Lively Arts Series continues with violinist Rachel Barton Pine. The recital is at 7 p.m. in Delkin Recital Hall in the Vivian A. Bull Music Center. Pine will perform a program titled, “American Traditions,” featuring both classic and contemporary works. Tickets are on sale at the door for $10, cash only. Linfield and K-12 students are free.
“Pine’s performance is a classical celebration of the violin’s American folk music roots, beginning with the European dance music of early immigrants and transforming into a uniquely American style thanks to the influence of African-American music-making,” Song said.
Linfield also hosts the Post-Haste Reed Duo, a saxophone and bassoon duo, at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29 in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium. The duo – Sean Fredenburg, an instructor of saxophone at Portland State University, and Javier Rodriguez, an associate professor of bassoon and director of graduate studies at the University of Idaho – frequently commission new works from composers with a wide range of musical styles and backgrounds. The recital is part of the Lacroute Composer Readings and Chamber Music Mentorship Program that brings professional musicians to Linfield University to work directly with composition students. A recital of original student works takes place Nov. 30. Both events are free.
