The Linfield University Concert Choir premieres original music from alumni composers Alex Zhang ’14 and Zach Gulaboff Davis ’14 in their upcoming homecoming-themed event.
The “Homecoming Concert,” a part of the university’s 2021 Homecoming celebration, takes place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 in the Richard and Lucille Ice Auditorium in Melrose Hall.
The concert program features three new works by the alumni pair – “Home Sweet Home,” “Sato no aki” and “On Craig Du” – in addition to a selection of other choral pieces. The event is free. Face masks are required of all attendees, regardless of vaccination status.
An outdoor reception on the patio between Walker Hall and the Riley Campus Center will follow.
Zhang’s compositions have been performed and recorded throughout U.S. and China by various ensembles including L’abri Trio, Duo Zonda, Durations Trio, as well as features with Charlotte New Music Festival, North American Saxophone Alliance Biannual Conference and Atlantic Music Festival. Originally from Chengdu, China, Zhang is currently a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in composition and a music theory graduate instructor at Texas Tech University.
Davis maintains an active schedule as a composer and collaborator. Originally from Salem, Oregon, his works have been performed at venues including Carnegie Hall, Columbia University and Bulgaria’s National Palace of Culture. He won the 2019 American Prize in Composition and has received other accolades and recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards and the Flute New Music Consortium, among others. He holds a Doctor of Music Arts from Johns Hopkins and master’s degrees from Johns Hopkins University and Mannes College of Music.
